Taiwan and South Korea's Stock Markets Closing in on India's Market Value

Taiwan and South Korea's stock markets are making significant strides, nearing India's total market value. With Taiwan's market cap soaring by 40% in 2026 and South Korea's tech sector driving growth, the competition is intensifying. Meanwhile, India's market faces challenges, including volatility and geopolitical tensions. This article delves into the factors influencing these markets and the potential implications for India's position in the global financial landscape.

Taiwan and South Korea's Market Surge

The stock markets of Taiwan and South Korea are rapidly approaching India's total market value. If the current momentum in the semiconductor and AI sectors continues, India may slip in the global market rankings. Taiwan's total market capitalization has reached approximately $4.6 trillion, which is only 6% less than India's $4.9 trillion. Meanwhile, South Korea is also narrowing the gap, with a market cap of around $4.2 trillion, about 12% lower than India's.

Taiwan's Market Growth in 2026

In 2026, Taiwan's stock market has experienced remarkable growth, with its market cap increasing by nearly 40% this year alone, adding over $1 trillion in value within the first four months. Over the past year, Taiwan's market value has surged by approximately $2.7 trillion, marking a significant increase of around 150%. This growth has positioned Taiwan among the world's top equity markets.

What Drives This Market Surge?

The primary driver behind Taiwan's rally is the semiconductor and AI sector. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been at the forefront of this growth, benefiting immensely from the rising global demand for AI hardware. TSMC alone accounts for over 40% of the total market value of Taiwan's main index.

However, the growth is not limited to TSMC. Other companies such as MediaTek, Hon Hai Precision Industry (which assembles iPhones and manufactures AI servers), ASE Technology Holding (a chip packaging company), Delta Electronics (a power management supplier), and Quanta Computer (an AI server maker) have also seen significant gains. These companies are capitalizing on the expansion of the global AI supply chain, establishing Taiwan as a crucial hub in the semiconductor network, supplying advanced chips to firms like NVIDIA.

South Korea's Market Trends

Similarly, South Korea's stock market has shown a comparable trend, with its total market cap reaching around $4.1 trillion. The KOSPI index has seen a sharp rise, supported by the strength of the technology sector. Memory chip manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have been the main contributors to this growth, playing a vital role in the global AI supply chain, and accounting for over 40% of the KOSPI's total market cap.

India's Stock Market Challenges

In contrast, India's stock market has faced considerable volatility since September 2024. The total market cap of listed Indian companies grew by only 2% in 2025, and has declined by about 7% so far in 2026. Factors contributing to this downturn include high valuations, sluggish profit growth, selling by foreign investors, and India's limited presence in the AI sector. Additionally, geopolitical tensions have increased pressure on the Indian market, with rising crude oil prices due to tensions between the USA, Iran, and Israel, leading to concerns over inflation and government financial pressures.
