Suvendu Adhikari Sworn in as West Bengal's First BJP Chief Minister

Suvendu Adhikari has been sworn in as West Bengal's first Chief Minister from the BJP, a historic moment celebrated by party leaders and supporters. This significant political shift comes after the BJP's impressive performance in the 2026 assembly elections, where they secured 207 seats. Adhikari's victories in key constituencies, including Bhabanipur and Nandigram, have set the stage for a new era in West Bengal politics. Historic Moment for West Bengal

On Saturday, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Suvendu Adhikari on his inauguration as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal, describing it as a victory for the nation. Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis stated, "This is not just a win for the BJP, but for India as a whole. West Bengal holds significant importance in terms of security, and we are all delighted with the formation of the government under Suvendu Adhikari. I extend my congratulations to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and all the newly appointed cabinet members." Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in marks a pivotal political development in West Bengal.


Prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, and Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Chief Ministers Manik Saha of Tripura, Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, Rekha Gupta of Delhi, and Pushkar Dhami of Uttarakhand, attended the swearing-in ceremony.


BJP's Strategic Victory

BJP leaders congratulated Suvendu Adhikari on his appointment as the leader of the BJP legislative party in West Bengal on Friday. Following the party's success in the 2026 assembly elections, Adhikari is set to take the oath as the state's next Chief Minister. On May 4, he secured victories in two of West Bengal's most talked-about constituencies, Bhabanipur and Nandigram, establishing a stronghold in both areas. According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a significant margin of 15,105 votes after the 20th and final round of counting in Bhabanipur.


Additionally, he won the Nandigram assembly seat, receiving 127,301 votes as per the official figures displayed on the Election Commission's website after the conclusion of the 19th and final round. In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, the BJP claimed victory in 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) managed to secure 80 seats after ruling the state for 15 years.
