Suvendu Adhikari's Vision for West Bengal

On Friday, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a candidate for the Chief Minister of West Bengal, delivered a powerful message to the people of Bengal after being elected as the leader of the legislative party. Addressing party legislators in Kolkata, he expressed that under his leadership, the state has nothing to fear. He emphasized the importance of trust over fear and committed to a governance style focused on actions rather than speeches. Adhikari stated, 'As long as I am alive, Bengal has no reason to be afraid. The fear in Bengal has vanished, and trust has been established. I will speak less and work more.'

Commitment to BJP Policies

Adhikari reiterated his commitment to strictly adhere to the policies of the BJP, indicating his close alignment with the party's national leadership. He assured that all promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be fulfilled without fail. Amidst enthusiastic applause from party legislators and supporters, he remarked, 'As Prime Minister Modi has said, the brotherhood is no more; now there is trust. I will follow the BJP's policies and work towards fulfilling Modi's promises in the state.'

Path to Chief Ministership

Earlier on Friday, Suvendu Adhikari was elected as the leader of the BJP's legislative party, paving the way for his ascension as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. This announcement followed a significant meeting of the newly elected BJP legislators in Kolkata, attended by key figures including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi, and the head of the party's Bengal unit, Samik Bhattacharya.

Inauguration Ceremony Details

Adhikari's oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, at 11 AM at the Parade Ground in Kolkata. The event will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, various central ministers, and chief ministers from several states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Adhikari's rise in Bengal politics has been remarkable; he was once a trusted aide of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee but switched to the BJP ahead of the 2021 assembly elections.

Leading the Charge Against Mamata Banerjee

Since then, Adhikari has played a leading role in the BJP's campaign against Banerjee. In the 2021 elections, Banerjee challenged him in Nandigram; however, she lost to Adhikari by a narrow margin. For the upcoming 2026 elections, the BJP leadership has fielded Adhikari in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, the latter being considered Banerjee's stronghold. Nevertheless, Adhikari defeated her for the second consecutive time by a margin of over 15,000 votes. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Adhikari secured 73,917 votes, while Banerjee received 58,812 votes.
