Assembly Membership Revoked

On Monday, Biman Banerjee, the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, announced the termination of suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir's assembly membership. This decision follows Kabir's suspension by the TMC for allegedly laying the foundation of a mosque in the style of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district.

Launch of New Political Party

In a public meeting in Beladanga, Kabir revealed the formation of a new political entity named the People's Uplift Party. He also disclosed the names of eight candidates who will represent this party in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections in the state.

Election Plans and Ambitions

Kabir, who represents Bharatpur, stated that he intends to contest from two constituencies in Murshidabad—Rejinagar and Beladanga. He mentioned, "We will inform you later about the total number of seats we will contest." His goal is to unseat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the forthcoming assembly elections, claiming she has become disconnected from the common people.

BJP's Response

The BJP has accused Kabir of aiding the TMC's return to power. State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya asserted that Kabir will have no significant impact in the upcoming elections and will face a crushing defeat alongside his former party, with which he is still allegedly in secret contact. Bhattacharya emphasized that the people of Bengal will reject both Kabir and his new party.

Concerns Over Vote Splitting

Bhattacharya further claimed that Kabir is attempting to split votes in favor of the BJP. He expressed confidence that, considering the situation in Bangladesh, the people of Bengal will thwart Kabir's efforts and opt for a strong nationalist force like the BJP, which can effectively counter extremism. The TMC has yet to comment on Kabir's new political venture, which follows his controversial announcement regarding the mosque.
