After leading India to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup, he has lost his T20I captaincy and was excluded from the squad due to a slump in form ahead of the upcoming tours to Ireland and England. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new T20I captain.

Under Iyer's captaincy, India's performance has faltered.
