Suryakumar Yadav Supports New T20I Captain and Praises Young Talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Suryakumar Yadav Shows Support for National Team
Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to victory in the T20 World Cup, has expressed his support for the national team and congratulated the promising young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the upcoming tours to Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games.
Change in T20I Leadership
On Saturday, the BCCI appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain for the T20I team, succeeding Suryakumar Yadav. This decision follows Yadav's successful leadership that led India to a historic ICC Men's T20 World Cup win earlier this year, marking the first time a team defended the title on home soil.
In a tribute to Yadav's leadership, the BCCI acknowledged his contributions on social media, stating, "A sterling example in leadership. It was a truly memorable tenure for Suryakumar Yadav as #TeamIndia's T20I captain that culminated in a historic ICC Men's T20 World Cup victory."
Suryakumar's Encouragement for the New Squad
Despite a challenging IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar responded positively to the squad announcement. He shared a photo of the team for the England tour on his Instagram story, wishing them success in their upcoming challenges.
He also praised 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who received his first national call-up after an impressive IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals. Suryakumar expressed his excitement for Sooryavanshi's journey, stating, "You have earned it and How. Super excited to follow your journey."
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Impressive IPL Performance
Sooryavanshi's selection follows a remarkable IPL 2026 season where he was the tournament's top run-scorer, amassing 776 runs. He achieved an astonishing strike rate of 237.30 and hit a record 72 sixes, showcasing his potential as one of cricket's most promising young talents.
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh also congratulated Sooryavanshi, noting his historic achievement as the youngest player selected for Team India. He expressed hope that this milestone marks the start of a successful career in Indian cricket.
Upcoming Matches and Asian Games
India's limited-overs campaign will kick off with a two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20I series in England from July 1 to 11.
Additionally, Sooryavanshi is included in India's squad for the 2026 Asian Games, which will take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 24 to October 3. The men's T20 cricket competition will feature ten teams, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.
