Aichi-Nagoya [Japan], September 25: Suruchi Singh, who recently secured a gold medal in the mixed team event at the Asian Games, expressed her eagerness to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite her victory, she shared her thoughts on her performance and her decision to keep celebrations modest.

India's Shooting Success

Following a brief period without medals, India achieved notable success in pistol shooting. The country earned two medals, including a silver in the men's 50 m rifle 3 positions team event, and the gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, marking India's second gold at the Games.

'Happy But Not Overly Celebrating'

In an interview after her victory, Suruchi stated, "Winning this gold medal brings me immense joy. It reflects the hard work of my family, the federation, and the government's support. I aimed to win gold and although I didn't achieve it in the individual event, I am thrilled to have done so in the mixed team event."

Looking Forward to Meeting PM Modi

Suruchi expressed her excitement about meeting PM Modi after the Asian Games 2026, saying, "I am looking forward to it, but I haven't planned what to say yet."

Reflections on Performance

Despite her success in the mixed doubles, Suruchi reflected on her earlier performance in the women's 10 m air pistol qualification, where she finished 26th and did not qualify for the singles medal match. She remarked, "I won't celebrate as much as I would have for an individual medal, but a medal is still a medal."

Gratitude for Support

Suruchi dedicated her medal to her parents and coach, acknowledging the significant role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in her achievements. She noted, "SAI provides substantial support, including monthly allowances, which is incredibly helpful for athletes like me."

Historic Gold Medal Achievement

In the mixed doubles final, Suruchi and her partner Kamaljeet scored a total of 484.6 points, surpassing South Korea's silver medal score of 478.0 points. Iran secured the bronze with 415.8 points. The Indian duo also set a new Asian record, breaking the previous record of 481.3 points established by Uzbekistan earlier this year.

India's Overall Medal Count

As of now, India has accumulated a total of 19 medals at the 2026 Asian Games, which includes two golds, eight silvers, and nine bronzes. The recent gold medal is India's second at these Games, following the women's cricket team's victory over Sri Lanka by 147 runs.
