Supreme Court's Directive on Asaram's Health

The Supreme Court instructed the Rajasthan government on Friday to obtain accurate information regarding the health of Asaram, who claims to be a god. Asaram is seeking interim bail on medical grounds. The bench of the Supreme Court expressed to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state, that they do not wish for any allegations to arise against either party. Mehta informed the bench that doctors have indicated that Asaram, convicted in a sexual assault case, needs to make lifestyle changes to maintain his health. The Supreme Court bench emphasized their desire to avoid any unfortunate incidents. Mehta stated that the state government would file an affidavit by July 20.

Background of Asaram's Conviction

The Rajasthan High Court upheld Asaram's conviction and life sentence for the rape of a minor on May 27, 2013. He has filed a plea in the Supreme Court for interim bail based on health issues. This case is being heard by Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale. Mehta reported to the court that Asaram is experiencing some bleeding due to a stomach issue, but it appears to be temporary, and he is currently on medication. The bench responded by urging the need for appropriate measures, as they wish to prevent any adverse events. Asaram's attorney noted that he is a high-risk patient.

Previous Temporary Release of Asaram

Mehta mentioned that three months prior, Asaram had visited Ayodhya and Kashi Vishwanath, walking everywhere during his temporary release for medical treatment. The bench has scheduled the next hearing for this case on July 21. On June 30, the Supreme Court requested a response from the Rajasthan government regarding Asaram's petition challenging the High Court's order that upheld his conviction and life sentence. The Supreme Court had stated that he should continue to receive medical facilities during this period, provided that the relevant medical authority is satisfied. The court also granted the petitioner the option to raise the matter immediately if his condition worsens.
