Supreme Court Upholds Gender Equality in Indian Armed Forces
Significant Ruling for Women in the Armed Forces
In a landmark decision promoting gender equality within the Indian Armed Forces, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed its earlier rulings granting permanent commissions to female officers. The court clarified that there will be no interference in the rights of women to serve permanently in the military.
The Supreme Court directed that the permanent commissions previously awarded to female officers will remain intact, emphasizing that the current arrangements will not be altered.
Legal Relief for Short Service Commission Officers
Providing significant relief, the Supreme Court ruled that female officers, particularly those who served as Short Service Commission Officers (SSCOs) and were affected by legal proceedings, will be considered to have completed 20 years of service if they were discharged at any stage during the legal process. Consequently, they will be eligible for pension-related benefits.
However, the court made it clear that while these officers will receive pension benefits, they will not be entitled to any salary arrears.
A Historic Step Towards Gender Equality
This ruling is viewed as a historic step towards ensuring gender equality in the armed forces, further strengthening the rights and service conditions of female officers in the Indian Army.
