Supreme Court to Review Arrest of Ashoka University Professor Over Controversial Social Media Posts
Legal Challenge by Ashoka University Professor
In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of Ali Khan Mahmudabad, head of the political science department at Ashoka University, who is contesting his arrest linked to social media comments about Operation Sindoor. The bench, led by Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih, acknowledged the arguments presented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mahmudabad, and indicated that the case would be scheduled for a hearing on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Sibal emphasized that the professor's arrest stemmed from a patriotic expression, urging for an expedited hearing. The Chief Justice responded positively, suggesting the matter could be addressed soon.
Mahmudabad was detained on Sunday following the filing of two FIRs against him, which included serious allegations of jeopardizing national integrity due to his posts regarding Operation Sindoor.
The Haryana State Commission for Women had previously issued a notice to the professor, questioning his statements. However, Mahmudabad defended his position, claiming his comments were misinterpreted and that he was exercising his right to free speech.
According to Haryana Deputy Commissioner of Police Narender Kadyan, the FIRs were registered at the Rai police station in Sonipat, one initiated by the chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women, Renu Bhatia, and the other by a local village sarpanch.
