Hearing Scheduled for Justice Verma's Petition

The Supreme Court is set to review a petition filed by Justice Yashwant Verma on Monday, July 28, challenging the findings of a three-judge panel against him. Last week, Justice Verma submitted a plea to the Supreme Court contesting the conclusions drawn by the internal investigation panel regarding the 'cash recovery case.' His petition seeks to dismiss the panel's report, which included substantial evidence and also contested the recommendation for impeachment made by former Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna.

In his petition, Justice Verma argued that the investigation violated principles of natural justice, claiming he was denied a fair hearing and the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses.

Details of the Case and Impeachment Proposal

He stated that the inquiry committee incorrectly placed the burden of proof on him, requiring him to disprove facts that the committee had assumed. The investigation was initiated after a significant amount of cash was discovered following a fire at his residence. Meanwhile, an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma has been introduced in the Lok Sabha, with 152 MPs signing it and submitting it to Speaker Om Birla. This motion is supported by members from various parties, including Congress, TDP, JD(U), JD(S), and CPM, and pertains to the 'cash recovery case' and a report presented before the Supreme Court.

Additionally, in the Rajya Sabha, a proposal demanding Justice Verma's removal was also presented, which was signed by over 50 Rajya Sabha MPs just hours before his resignation on Monday.
