Supreme Court Sets Firm Deadline for Aravalli Hills Report: What’s at Stake?

Supreme Court's Directive on Aravalli Hills Report

New Delhi: On Monday, the Supreme Court denied a request for a six-month extension for the High-Powered Committee tasked with defining and safeguarding the Aravalli Hills.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, instructed the committee to finalize its report by November 30. The court cautioned that failure to meet this deadline would result in the committee being restructured.

The Chief Justice emphasized, "The panel must work tirelessly to deliver a report on the Aravalli matter. If they cannot accomplish this within two months, we will reconstitute the entire committee."

The Supreme Court had previously appointed the Aravalli High-Powered Committee (HPC), which sought an extension, citing the need for additional time to conduct a thorough and justifiable evaluation of the Aravalli range.

This issue gained attention after the court took suo motu notice in December of the previous year, amidst disputes regarding the approved definition of the Aravalli hills.
