Supreme Court Reviews Medical Report on Asaram Bapu's Health

Supreme Court's Consideration of Medical Report

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court examined a medical report from AIIMS regarding Asaram Bapu, who has been convicted of rape and claims to be a god. The report indicated that he does not require hospitalization but needs continuous medical supervision. A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale scheduled a hearing for his interim bail plea based on medical grounds for August 6. The bench noted that while the report stated hospitalization was unnecessary, it also emphasized the need for round-the-clock medical care. The court had previously requested AIIMS to submit a medical report concerning Asaram's health on July 21.

Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General representing the Rajasthan government, had earlier opposed Asaram's bail application, informing the bench that he had traveled to Ayodhya and Kashi three months ago after being granted bail on medical grounds. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing Asaram's plea challenging the Rajasthan High Court's decision to uphold his conviction in a case involving the sexual assault of a minor devotee in Jodhpur in 2013. He has also requested interim bail while his appeal is pending. A trial court had found Asaram and two co-accused guilty.

In May of this year, the High Court upheld Asaram's sentence for rape and related offenses; however, it concluded that charges of criminal conspiracy and gang rape were not proven, leading to his acquittal on those counts.
