Supreme Court's Decision on Rajya Sabha Elections

According to the attorney representing BJP's Rajya Sabha candidate Mahesh Kevat, the Supreme Court has refused to impose an interim stay on the ongoing Rajya Sabha election process in Madhya Pradesh, as well as to prevent officials from announcing the results. Lawyer Sandeep Gupta stated on Thursday that the court has agreed to list Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan's petition challenging the rejection of her nomination papers for hearing on June 12. This statement follows a mention of the case by Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is representing Natarajan, during court proceedings. Speaking to reporters, Gupta noted that Singhvi raised the issue in court, but the court declined to intervene in the election process. Even when Singhvi requested an interim stay, the court maintained its position against interfering in the elections.

Gupta emphasized that the court has chosen not to intervene at this stage. He mentioned that the court stated it would hear their arguments the following day and did not issue any interim stay order today. The court reiterated its stance of not interfering in the election process. The Supreme Court is set to hear Natarajan's petition regarding the rejection of her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh. The petition claims that the Returning Officer acted unlawfully, arbitrarily, and biasedly, demanding an immediate cancellation of the decision to reject her nomination.

On Wednesday, a delegation of ten Congress members met with the Election Commission in New Delhi concerning the rejection of Natarajan's nomination for the Rajya Sabha. Senior Congress MP and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged that the Returning Officer's decision to reject Natarajan's nomination was "incorrect" and violated the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, as there has not yet been any cognizance taken of a criminal case against the Congress candidate. Singhvi argued that Natarajan's nomination was rejected well before the stage at which disclosure of information is legally required.
