Supreme Court Declines New Plea on Cauvery Water Dispute Between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

Supreme Court's Stance on Cauvery Water Allocation

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed a new petition regarding the distribution of Cauvery river water, emphasizing that the issue is already under dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, remarked that if they began to consider petitions from societies involved in disputes between states, it would lead to an endless cycle of litigation.

The court rejected the plea, which included a request for the reallocation of 70 TMC of Cauvery water from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka.

The Karnataka government informed the Supreme Court that it had released surplus water to Tamil Nadu as of August 31 and was adhering to the directives of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to maintain a flow of 9,000 cusecs.

On August 25, the CWMA supported the recommendations of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), instructing Karnataka to ensure a consistent flow of 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for a duration of 15 days.

The Tamil Nadu government had previously notified the authority about a backlog of water but noted that no action was taken in response.

The Supreme Court was addressing Tamil Nadu's request for immediate water release from Karnataka during the proceedings.

Earlier, on August 17, the court had directed Karnataka to comply with the CWMA's order regarding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government expressed concerns that it was not receiving its fair share of Cauvery water during a year marked by insufficient rainfall.

On August 3, the government led by Joseph Vijay approached the Supreme Court, seeking immediate directives for water release from Karnataka, claiming that both the allocated and received amounts were inadequate.
