Supreme Court Bar Association Calls for Justice Amidst Allegations of Police Brutality Against Lawyers
SCBA Voices Concerns Over Treatment of Lawyers
New Delhi: On Saturday, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) expressed its disapproval regarding the alleged excessive force used against lawyers and urged Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to take immediate action. Reports indicate that the lawyers were en route to Jantar Mantar for a protest called by the Chief Justice of the People (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The SCBA's resolution highlighted that numerous advocates had been detained during the incident.
The association conveyed its serious concern over the reported violence and detainment of both senior and junior lawyers, especially women, who were peacefully demonstrating in the vicinity of the Supreme Court.
In their resolution, the SCBA called upon the Chief Justice of India to urgently engage with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and whereabouts of all detained lawyers, provide them with legal support, and facilitate the immediate release of those without lawful grounds for detention.
Additionally, the SCBA requested a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the detentions and the alleged use of force, advocating for appropriate legal actions to be taken.
This resolution will be presented to the Chief Justice of India for prompt consideration.
Advocate Pragya Baghel, the honorary secretary of the SCBA, later confirmed that all detained lawyers have since been released.
The CJP organized the protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar due to accusations of manipulation in the voter list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and modifications related to Form 6, which is utilized for voter registration.
