After being invited to bat first, the defending champions faced a challenging start as RCB's debutant bowler Jacob Duffy dismissed the Sunrisers' openers cheaply. Following this, Shepherd took down Harsh Dubey for three runs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Harshal Patel for a two-ball duck, leaving Hyderabad at 175/8 after 18 overs.

In the 19th over, Aniket Verma showcased his hitting prowess with two sixes and a four before Shepherd took his wicket. Verma's explosive innings of 43 runs off just 18 balls, which included three fours and four sixes, helped Sunrisers surpass the 200-run mark, concluding their innings at 201/9.
