Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar achieved a significant milestone by winning the bronze medal in the men's Greco-Roman 87kg category at the Asian Games 2026 on Wednesday. This victory marks the beginning of India's wrestling medal tally at this prestigious continental competition.

In a commanding performance, Sunil faced off against Callum Johnston Roberts from the Philippines, triumphing with a decisive 9-0 victory through technical superiority. He maintained dominance throughout the match, preventing Roberts from scoring any points while consistently adding to his own score, ultimately securing a comfortable win.

With this achievement, Sunil not only clinched the bronze medal but also became the first Indian wrestler to earn two medals in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Asian Games.

Gold Medals in Shooting and Archery

Earlier in the day, the Indian shooting pair of Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai made headlines by winning a gold medal in the mixed trap team shooting event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. They also set a new Games record, marking India's first gold in this event.

In the archery segment, the Indian women's compound team, consisting of Jyothi Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, and Prithika Pradeep, secured gold by defeating China with a score of 238-234. This victory allowed them to match South Korea's world record of 238, established in 2014.

Neeru, who previously won a historic gold in the women's trap individual event, along with Kynan, achieved a score of 34, surpassing the previous Asian Games record of 30 set by Qatar earlier this year. Qatar took home the silver medal with a score of 32, while China settled for bronze with 23 points.
