Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar shared insights on how two missed catches by the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers provided him with a pivotal opportunity in his cricketing journey. He drew parallels between these moments and the mission of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, which offers free heart surgeries to children with congenital heart defects. Speaking at the event 'An Evening with Legends: Compassion in Action' in Bengaluru, Gavaskar emphasized how Sobers' kindness and the chances he received early in his career influenced his commitment to giving others a second chance.

A Cricketing Second Chance

Reflecting on his debut Test match against the West Indies, Gavaskar recounted how he was on 12 runs when Sobers dropped a seemingly easy catch at slip. This fortunate moment allowed him to continue batting and ultimately achieve his first Test half-century, securing his position for the next game. He noted that he was granted another chance in the subsequent Test when Sobers again failed to catch a more challenging ball.

Linking Cricket to Compassion

The former Indian captain highlighted the connection between his experiences and the work done at Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, where children from underprivileged backgrounds receive heart surgeries at no cost. 'This second chance aligns with our mission here, where children born with congenital heart defects are given free surgeries, allowing them to lead productive lives,' Gavaskar stated.

Gavaskar commended the medical professionals at the hospitals, noting their impressive success rate of over 99%. 'Considering we are performing surgeries on children's hearts, the exceptional skill of our doctors and support staff is truly commendable,' he remarked.

Understanding the Impact

He pointed out that many children receiving treatment come from rural areas and families reliant on daily wages, where missing work can have dire consequences. 'Not a single rupee is charged. Most of these children come from financially struggling families, where a missed day of work means hunger for the entire family,' Gavaskar explained.

Gavaskar's Most Fulfilling Innings

Describing his involvement with the initiative as the most rewarding phase of his life, Gavaskar mentioned that his connection with cricket has continued beyond his playing days through media engagements and sports-related ventures. 'This is my third innings, and it is the most fulfilling one yet. I have been fortunate to represent India for 17 years across various formats and continue my association with cricket through media and sports marketing,' he shared.

A Cricketing Legend

Gavaskar, celebrated as one of India's finest opening batsmen, was the first player to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket and held the record for the most Test centuries (34) until Sachin Tendulkar surpassed it in 2005. He scored 774 runs in his debut Test series against the West Indies in 1971 and was part of India's victorious 1983 Cricket World Cup team.
