Indian mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor Suchika Tariyal expressed her determination to win a gold medal but remains proud of her groundbreaking bronze achievement at the Asian Games 2026. She made history by securing India's inaugural MMA medal, finishing third in the women's traditional 60kg category after a semifinal loss to Singapore's Teo Hui Hoon.

Discontent with the Semifinal Decision

"I put forth my utmost effort to change the medal's color. Unfortunately, due to various factors, I couldn't achieve that, and I believe there may have been a slight shortcoming on my part. I feel the decision did not favor me, and I strongly disagree with it," Suchika remarked after her bronze medal win.

Performance Over Weight

"Witnesses of the bout told me I performed exceptionally well. Although I couldn't secure a different medal, I take pride in winning the admiration of my fellow countrymen," she added. Regarding the semifinal, which was decided by a tie-break based on body weight, Suchika acknowledged the rules but insisted that performance should be the deciding factor. "I know the rules state that in a tie, the lighter athlete wins, but a fight should not be judged solely on that. I was clearly in control during the match, executing all the takedowns while my opponent failed to land any," she explained.

Support from Her Husband

Suchika also expressed gratitude towards her husband, Kapil Hooda, for his unwavering support throughout her career. She noted that his sacrifices and belief in her have been crucial in allowing her to continue competing post-marriage. "Kapil has immense faith in my abilities. He has made significant sacrifices for my career, covering my expenses during training camps, even taking loans without informing me. My only wish is for him to clear those loans! That would make me happy," she shared.
