Completion of Special Intensive Revision Process

The Election Commission of India has successfully concluded the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists on Friday. This initiative involved updating the voter lists in a total of 12 states and union territories, including Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the removal of approximately 6.08 crore voters from the lists. The completion of this phase follows the release of the final voter list for Uttar Pradesh.

The final voter lists have been published for states such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa.

Statistics from the Election Officials

According to data shared by the Chief Electoral Officers of these states and union territories, when the SIR was announced on October 27 last year, the combined voter lists for these regions contained around 51 crore names. After the completion of the SIR process, the total number of names in the voter lists has decreased to approximately 44.92 crore, indicating a removal of 6.08 crore names.

Significance and Impact

The release of the final list in a large state like Uttar Pradesh marks a significant achievement in election management. The figures provided by the Chief Electoral Officers highlight the necessity of eliminating 'deadwood' (unusable data) to maintain the integrity of the democratic process.

Conclusion: This cleansing of voter lists is expected to be a milestone in preventing 'fake voting' in upcoming elections and will aid in accurately assessing voter turnout. The 12 states and union territories now have a more transparent and authentic voter base.
