Guwahati, Oct 8: In a show of solidarity, members of the B Barooah College Students’ Union and fellow students gathered in Guwahati on Thursday, demanding justice for former student Himashree Boro, whose body was recently discovered in Andhra Pradesh.

The demonstrators called for a comprehensive investigation into the events leading to her death and urged railway officials and law enforcement to identify and hold accountable those responsible.

“We are here to seek justice for Himashree. We request the Railway and police to find the culprits and ensure they face consequences,” stated Krish Pawe, the general secretary of the B Barooah College Students’ Union.

Himashree, a 20-year-old from Chapaidong, had traveled to Andhra Pradesh on August 13 with a dance troupe for a two-month assignment.

On October 6, she boarded the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express in Visakhapatnam to return to Guwahati, as she was set to take an SBI examination.

Tragically, her journey ended when her body was found in a forested area near the railway tracks in Tekkali, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

The details surrounding her death have left her family heartbroken and raised concerns about potential foul play.

Her mother has suggested that Himashree may have been intentionally killed and has appealed to Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for a thorough investigation.

“We believe it was a planned murder. A group of men surrounded her. I urge the Chief Minister to look into how she was killed. She suffered a brutal death. Her body was found in a jungle,” her mother expressed.

The family has also questioned the circumstances of Himashree’s disappearance. Her mother mentioned that she attempted to reach her after losing contact, but her phone initially rang before going silent.

According to the family, Himashree was traveling with a group of eight, and payments for three events were reportedly still owed by the organizers.

Her sister-in-law voiced suspicions regarding the dance group that accompanied Himashree to Andhra Pradesh.

She claimed that the group’s manager was from Andhra Pradesh and that the troupe had brought dancers from Guwahati for performances.

Himashree was also reportedly in touch with a woman named Sumitra Devi, who had facilitated the group's trip to Andhra Pradesh.

Her sister-in-law noted that Himashree had expressed fear in her messages and maintained contact with her mother and a friend until around 1:30 am.

“She sent us a video, which was our last communication with her,” the sister-in-law recounted.

The family further alleged that Himashree arrived at a railway station around 7:30 am but missed her train due to a late arrival and subsequently took another train.

They claimed that her belongings, including clothes, a bag, and important documents, were found when the train reached Guwahati.

The discovery of her belongings has led the family to question why Himashree could not be located sooner.

Both the protesters and Himashree’s family are demanding a thorough investigation into her death, including her activities leading up to her disappearance and the events that followed.

This incident has reignited concerns among students and families regarding the safety of young individuals who leave Assam in search of opportunities.

As of the time of this report, authorities in both Andhra Pradesh and Assam have not released any statements regarding the case.
