Strengthening Ties: PM Modi Hosts Swiss President Guy Parmelin in New Delhi

This visit marks a pivotal moment in India-Switzerland relations, emphasizing shared democratic values and mutual respect. Parmelin's visit coincides with the first anniversary of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, highlighting the importance of their partnership. The meeting is expected to further strengthen ties and foster collaboration in various sectors.
 

Bilateral Talks Between India and Switzerland

New Delhi, Oct 5: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Swiss President Guy Parmelin at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.


The two leaders exchanged warm greetings before engaging in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. Their talks will cover various sectors, including trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, cultural exchanges, and mobility.


Additionally, they will discuss regional and global issues, focusing on collaboration within multilateral platforms, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).


Earlier, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met with President Parmelin in New Delhi, expressing gratitude for his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.


"I was pleased to meet President Guy Parmelin of the Swiss Confederation during his State Visit to India. I appreciate his dedication to enhancing our partnership, particularly regarding the India-EFTA TEPA," Jaishankar shared on X.


He expressed confidence that the discussions between Parmelin and PM Modi would advance their cooperation across various fields.


Upon his arrival, President Parmelin received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was greeted by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi.


After the welcome ceremony, Parmelin remarked, "This visit serves as a significant opportunity to highlight the value both Switzerland and India place on our relationship."


He emphasized that the partnership is founded on shared democratic principles, trust, and mutual respect.


"My visit marks a pivotal moment for further growth and strengthening of our longstanding partnership. I am honored to discuss bilateral and global issues during this time," the Swiss President stated.


Parmelin also expressed his pleasure in commemorating the first anniversary of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) during his stay.


He arrived in India for a three-day State visit at PM Modi's invitation, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, and mobility.


This marks President Parmelin's inaugural State visit to India and his second trip this year, having previously attended the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February 2026.


During his visit, he will also meet with President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honor.


The MEA underscored Switzerland's significance as an economic ally, noting that it is India's largest trade and investment partner among the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) nations.


The ministry reiterated the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges to further strengthen the longstanding ties between the two countries.


"India and Switzerland enjoy a rich history of friendly relations. This visit will enhance bilateral ties and foster cooperation in new areas of mutual interest," the MEA concluded in its statement.
