Strengthening Ties: Dutch Naval Ship Visits Kochi Amid Enhanced Maritime Cooperation
Deepening Maritime Relations Between India and the Netherlands
Kochi: The recent docking of a Dutch naval vessel in Kochi, accompanied by a prominent delegation from the Netherlands, highlights the growing maritime collaboration between India and the European country, as stated by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.
The Royal Netherlands Navy Ship HNLMS De Ruyter (F804), a De Zeven Provincien-class frigate, arrived on May 4, coinciding with the visit of the Dutch naval delegation to the Southern Naval Command (SNC) in Kochi.
This delegation features Major General (Royal Marines) Rob De Wit, who serves as the Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy (DCN), along with Marisa Gerards, the Netherlands' Ambassador to India.
As per the Ministry's announcement, HNLMS De Ruyter was escorted by Indian Navy fast interceptor crafts and received a ceremonial welcome complete with a naval band upon its arrival at Kochi Harbour. The ship is currently on a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific region, where it will engage in various maritime exercises with allied nations.
Previously, the DCN of the Royal Netherlands Navy took part in the 9th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Conclave of Chiefs, which was part of the MILAN exercise held in Visakhapatnam in February.
During their visit, the Dutch delegation met with Rear Admiral Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff at the Southern Naval Command. Discussions focused on mutual interests in maritime affairs and potential avenues for enhancing naval cooperation.
In a notable act coinciding with the Netherlands' National Remembrance Day on May 4, Rob De Wit and Ambassador Marisa laid wreaths at the SNC War Memorial in Kochi, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The delegation is also set to participate in a series of bilateral meetings aimed at improving training cooperation and sharing best practices.
They will tour various professional training facilities at the Southern Naval Command and observe demonstrations of advanced simulators and modern training infrastructure.
Additionally, the delegation plans to visit Cochin Shipyard Limited to learn about India's shipbuilding capabilities and explore opportunities for industrial collaboration.
The Defence Ministry also noted that a range of professional and social interactions between personnel from both navies is on the agenda.
Upon leaving Kochi, HNLMS De Ruyter will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with an Indian naval vessel, further enhancing interoperability and operational synergy.
