Strengthening Sports Ties: Modi Highlights India-Netherlands Collaboration
PM Modi Emphasizes Growing Sports Relations
During a community event in The Hague on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the strengthening sports connections between India and the Netherlands. He acknowledged the impact of Indian-origin athletes on the Dutch cricket team and the influence of Dutch coaches on Indian hockey.
Impressive Performance in T20 World Cup
While addressing attendees as part of his five-nation tour, PM Modi reflected on the Netherlands' commendable performance in the T20 World Cup, which India co-hosted with Sri Lanka. He recalled how the Dutch team posed a significant challenge to the Indian squad, who ultimately emerged as the tournament winners.
Netherlands' Competitive Spirit
In the 2026 T20 World Cup, the Netherlands managed to secure one victory but showcased their competitive spirit by closely contesting matches against both Pakistan and India. PM Modi remarked, "Both nations are collaborating extensively in sports. India hosted the T20 World Cup, where the Netherlands exhibited remarkable talent. Although India is the reigning champion, the Netherlands certainly challenged us during the match."
Contributions in Cricket and Hockey
The Prime Minister praised the contributions of players of Indian descent, such as Vikramjit Singh, Teja Nidamanuru, and Aryan Dutt, to Dutch cricket. He also highlighted the significant role of coach Sjoerd Marijne in advancing Indian women's hockey. Modi stated, "The Netherlands performed admirably in the T20 Cricket World Cup held in India. Just as Indian players have made their mark in Dutch cricket, the Netherlands has also contributed to Indian hockey through coach Sjoerd Marijne's efforts."
