Key Discussions Between Leaders
New Delhi, Sep 4: Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met with India's Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi on Thursday, where they focused on enhancing collaboration in education and skill development.
Following the meeting, Wong shared on X, "Had a fruitful discussion with India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on strengthening Singapore-India cooperation in education and skills development — a key pillar of our strong bilateral partnership."
Meeting with PM Modi
Earlier that day, Wong also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Their discussions revolved around expanding cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalization, healthcare, and security.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the leaders also addressed regional and global issues of mutual concern.
"Stronger India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership! PM Narendra Modi and PM Lawrence Wong held wide-ranging and fruitful talks at Hyderabad House today. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalization, healthcare and medicine, skilling, sustainability, defence and security as also people-to-people and cultural connections," Jaiswal posted on X.
Roadmap for Future Cooperation
During their meeting, both leaders agreed to adopt a roadmap for the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which will guide the future of their bilateral relationship.
The joint statement from India and Singapore highlighted that both Prime Ministers recalled their agreement to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Modi’s official visit to Singapore in September 2024. They agreed to adopt a substantive roadmap that would deepen cooperation in eight key areas.
Economic and Industrial Collaboration
The two nations will continue discussions on the Third Review of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and aim for a substantial review of the ASEAN India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) by 2025. They plan to jointly develop sustainable industrial parks with advanced manufacturing capabilities.
The joint statement emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between the business communities of both countries, particularly through initiatives like the India-Singapore Business Roundtable (ISBR).
Space and Technology Initiatives
India and Singapore also agreed to collaborate in the space sector, focusing on joint efforts between their respective space agencies. This includes research and development in areas such as Earth observation and satellite communication technologies.
Additionally, both nations will enhance legal cooperation to address business needs and strengthen digital finance and fintech collaboration.
Commitment to Sustainability and Security
The leaders committed to working together on green initiatives within multilateral frameworks and exploring cooperation in urban water management and civil nuclear domains.
Recognizing the increasing travel demand between the two countries, they encouraged civil aviation authorities to discuss expanding the bilateral Air Services Agreement to improve air connectivity.
Counter-Terrorism Efforts
The joint statement reaffirmed both nations' commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism. They pledged to strengthen cooperation against global and regional terrorism through various bilateral and multilateral platforms.
