Tokyo, July 3: A number of Japanese media outlets have reported positively on the recent 16th India-Japan Annual Summit that took place in New Delhi, highlighting the ongoing enhancement of bilateral ties across various strategic and economic domains.

This coverage follows the discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, PM Sanae Takaichi, during their summit on Thursday, where they evaluated and reinforced their comprehensive cooperation.

During the meeting, PM Takaichi aimed to strengthen relations with India, a crucial partner in the Indo-Pacific, amid rising concerns regarding supply chain disruptions, energy security, and China's growing influence in the region, as noted by The Japan Times.

The report indicated that the summit is particularly significant for Tokyo, given the escalating tensions with Beijing, which have arisen from China's economic maneuvers, including recent export restrictions on dual-use goods and the blacklisting of Japanese firms.

With supply chain resilience being a diplomatic focus for Takaichi's administration, India is seen as an increasingly appealing partner due to its vast market, expanding manufacturing capabilities, and a skilled workforce in technology.

Japan views India as a vital ally in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, especially in light of China's assertive military and economic actions in the area, according to Kyodo News.

The summit occurs against a backdrop of strained Sino-Japanese relations. Since January, China has imposed stricter controls on shipments of dual-use items to Japan, including critical rare earth materials, following Takaichi's comments on Taiwan last November that displeased Beijing.

Both leaders also committed to enhancing economic security cooperation, focusing on ensuring stable supplies of energy and essential minerals in response to developments in the Middle East and China.

During their 90-minute discussions in New Delhi, they agreed to bolster maritime security collaboration and reached a preliminary agreement regarding Japan's export of Unicorn communication antennas to India, which are currently utilized on Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force's Mogami-class destroyers, as reported by The Japan News.

“India is a reliable partner with whom we share a strategic vision. We aim to elevate our relationship to new heights,” Takaichi stated at a joint press conference after their discussions.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the leaders agreed to further their cooperation in security matters based on the revised "Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation between Japan and India" from last year.

They also expressed intentions to enhance training in the Indian Ocean, promote naval vessel maintenance cooperation, and advance defense equipment and technology collaboration under the 'Make in India' initiative, welcoming progress on the transfer of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna ‘UNICORN.’ To facilitate this cooperation, both leaders instructed relevant departments to engage in discussions and plan for the next Japan-India "2+2" meeting within this year, as stated by the Ministry.

PM Takaichi participated in an informal dinner hosted by PM Modi on Thursday, where they engaged in extensive discussions about bilateral relations, global development, and cultural exchanges between India and Japan.

“The dinner was characterized by a warm and friendly atmosphere, with discussions covering a broad spectrum of topics related to bilateral ties, international issues, and the cultures of both nations, thereby strengthening their personal relationship of trust,” a statement from the Japanese Prime Minister's office read.
