Enhanced Defence and Security Collaboration

Gandhinagar, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on Monday that the increasing collaboration between India and Germany in the defence and security sectors exemplifies a "testament to mutual trust and shared vision." He expressed gratitude to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for facilitating smoother defence trade processes.

PM Modi highlighted the shared priorities of both nations in renewable energy and announced the establishment of the India-Germany Centre of Excellence to bolster this cooperation.

During a joint press conference with Chancellor Merz, following their discussions, PM Modi noted that 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany, underscoring that the expanding trade and investment connections have revitalized their strategic partnership.

"Chancellor Merz's visit is timely. Last year, we celebrated 25 years of our strategic partnership, and this year, we commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations. These milestones symbolize our shared ambitions, mutual trust, and increasingly robust cooperation," he stated.

"The close collaboration between economies like India and Germany is vital for humanity. Our bilateral trade has reached unprecedented levels, surpassing USD 50 billion," he added.

The Prime Minister pointed out that over 2,000 German firms have established a significant presence in India, reflecting their confidence in the vast opportunities available. He mentioned the India-Germany CEO Forum, where both leaders engaged with business executives earlier in the day.

"The technological partnership between India and Germany has grown stronger each year, with visible impacts today. We share common goals in renewable energy," he remarked.

"To further this collaboration, we have decided to set up the India-Germany Centre of Excellence, which will act as a platform for knowledge, technology, and innovation," he continued.

Welcoming Chancellor Merz to India, PM Modi noted, "This is Friedrich Merz's inaugural visit to India and Asia as Chancellor, highlighting the significance he places on our relationship. I appreciate his personal commitment. India is dedicated to enhancing its friendship and partnership with Germany, and we warmly welcome Chancellor Merz to our country."

PM Modi also announced plans for a roadmap to boost cooperation between the defence industries of both nations.

He expressed thanks to Chancellor Merz for the introduction of visa-free transit for Indian citizens, emphasizing that this decision will further strengthen the bonds between the two countries.

"Our growing collaboration in defence and security reflects our mutual trust and shared vision. I sincerely thank Chancellor Merz for streamlining defence trade procedures. We will also develop a roadmap to enhance cooperation between our defence industries, paving the way for new opportunities in co-development and co-production," he added.

Highlighting the deep-rooted people-to-people connections, PM Modi stated, "India and Germany share a rich history of profound ties. The works of Rabindranath Tagore provided new insights to the German intellectual community, while Swami Vivekananda's teachings inspired many across Europe, including Germany."

"Moreover, Madame Cama garnered global attention for India's quest for freedom by raising the flag of independence for the first time in Germany. Today, we are building on this rich legacy, transforming our historical connections into a dynamic, modern partnership," the Prime Minister concluded.
