Strengthening India-Australia Ties Through Sports
Enhancing Relations via Sports
During his three-day visit to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India's growing prominence in the sports arena and expressed hope for an expanding partnership with Australia. He addressed the Indian community at the 'Melbourne Meets Modi' event on Thursday.
PM Modi emphasized that sports play a crucial role in fortifying the relationship between the two nations. He mentioned the successful 'Khelo India' initiative, which nurtures athletes from the school level and organizes the 'Khelo India Games' at various tiers, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds and genders to shine in sports. He stated, "Sports is another area that strengthens our nations' ties. Australia is a renowned name in sports, and India's sports ecosystem is also evolving. You may have heard of Khelo India, which develops athletes from a young age. The Khelo India Games see participation from millions of Indian athletes, and infrastructure is being built in remote regions. Women are being empowered in sports, and career opportunities are emerging in this field. Indian athletes are improving continuously. India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is also a contender for the 2036 Olympics. I am confident that our sports partnership with Australia will flourish further," said PM Modi.
India-Australia Friendship at New Heights
Continuing his remarks on the India-Australia relationship, PM Modi expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, stating, "Melbourne has become a significant venue. I am thankful to my friend, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has been supportive of India. You were present with us in Sydney, and now you are here with the Indian community in Melbourne; it feels like a full circle moment. From Ahmedabad, home to the largest cricket stadium, to Melbourne's iconic venue, we have shared experiences in both places."
"Prime Minister Albanese has a unique ability to connect with the Indian community. His impact in Sydney was remarkable, and he has won hearts here as well. My visit to Australia in 2014 marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister had visited in 28 years. I assured then that you wouldn't have to wait another 28 years for a visit. This is my third visit in 12 years—a hat-trick of visits—showing the remarkable progress in India-Australia relations. And the credit goes to all of you, not just me," he added. PM Modi's visit to Australia spans from July 8 to July 10.
