State Health System Faces Specialist Doctor Shortage
Challenges in Healthcare Services
The healthcare system in the state is currently grappling with a significant shortage of super-specialist doctors. Numerous positions for specialist physicians remain unfilled in government medical colleges and major hospitals, leading to delays in patient treatment and consultations.
According to officials from the health department, there is a critical lack of specialist doctors in fields such as cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology, and other super-specialty areas. Many medical colleges and district hospitals do not have enough doctors compared to the sanctioned posts, which adds extra pressure on healthcare services.
Reports indicate that the government plans to rehire experienced doctors who have retired but are still willing to serve. These doctors will be appointed on special contracts to help alleviate the shortage of specialist services in hospitals.
A major challenge for the health department is that most super-specialist doctors prefer to work in larger institutions located in the capital, Jaipur. Many physicians are reluctant to transfer or accept positions in smaller towns and new medical colleges, resulting in a limited availability of specialists in several districts.
Experts believe that merely appointing retired doctors will not provide a long-term solution to the issue. There is a need to increase the number of seats in medical education, offer better facilities to attract specialist doctors, and implement special incentive schemes for those willing to serve in remote areas.
Healthcare professionals warn that if this issue is not addressed promptly, it could have a direct impact on patients in the coming years. Individuals may have to travel to larger cities for treatment of serious illnesses, leading to both economic and social challenges.
Currently, the government aims to strengthen healthcare services by leveraging the experience of retired specialist doctors to provide better treatment to patients. However, ensuring the long-term availability of specialist doctors remains a significant challenge for both the government and the health department.
