SRMIST Celebrates Sports Achievements with Cash Rewards
SRMIST Honors Sports Achievers
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 2: The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) recognized the accomplishments of six student athletes and one alumna by awarding them cash prizes totaling ₹23 lakh for their performances at the 2026 Asian Games and in international chess competitions.
Ceremony Highlights
During the felicitation event, named 'Celebrating the Asian Games Medal Winners and Three Chess Grandmasters', SRMIST Vice Chancellor Ravi Pachamuthu emphasized the vital role of sports in fostering discipline and mental resilience. He noted the institution's commitment to preparing athletes for future Olympic events, stating, "Competition fosters growth and builds mental toughness. This is why we consistently promote sports, and our universities do the same. With an eye on the Olympics, we are preparing mentally, and our director is training the students accordingly."
Athlete Testimonials and Olympic Aspirations
Indian squash player Shameena Riaz and sailor Nethra Kumanan expressed their gratitude for the university's support, which they credited for their success in sports. Shameena, who earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games, shared her pride in this achievement, especially given her family's legacy in the sport. "Winning a bronze medal for India is a matter of pride. In squash, I consider this one of the most significant events. My father has previously won both a gold and a silver medal, so following in his footsteps -- even if with a bronze -- is a truly wonderful feeling," she remarked.
She also acknowledged the institution's role in her development, stating that the recognition and financial reward would inspire her to strive for further success. "I am currently a student at SRM, and the institution has supported me immensely in every possible way. They have now honored us and also provided a substantial cash reward; this motivates us to work even harder and win more medals for our country, our state, and our college," she added. Shameena is currently focused on her training for upcoming competitions.
Future Aspirations
Nethra expressed her appreciation for the university's assistance with her international travel and training, which she believes has been crucial for her competitive success. "We are all very grateful to our university for supporting us -- enabling us to travel abroad, undergo training, participate in competitions, and compete in races. It is because of this support that we are able to perform at our best and return with achievements," she stated.
Looking ahead, Nethra's primary goal is to help India qualify for the Olympic Games. "My next goal is to help India qualify for the Olympics. There are some events coming up in January, for which I will begin training next week. And then, the aim is to return from the Olympics with a significant achievement," she concluded.

The ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of student athletes from the institution for their performances at the Asian Games, as well as recognizing chess players for their international successes.
