Sri Lanka Stuns New Zealand in Women's T20 World Cup Upset
Sri Lanka's Historic Victory
In a thrilling encounter in Southampton on Tuesday, Sri Lanka achieved a remarkable upset by defeating the defending champions, New Zealand, marking their first victory over the White Ferns in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
Chasing a target of 151 runs, Sri Lanka successfully reached it in 19.4 overs, thanks to an impressive unbeaten half-century from Nilakshika Silva. She played a pivotal role in stabilizing the middle order after a shaky start. Silva was well-supported by 23-year-old Kaushani Nuthyangana, who contributed 24 runs off just 14 balls and hit the winning runs, securing Sri Lanka's triumph.
New Zealand's Struggles Continue
This defeat marks New Zealand's second consecutive loss in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026, having previously fallen to the West Indies by seven wickets.
New Zealand's Innings Overview
After opting to bat first, New Zealand faced an early setback with the loss of Isabella Gaze. However, they managed to recover through significant partnerships for the second and third wickets. Captain Amelia Kerr formed a 49-run partnership with Georgia Plimmer for the second wicket and later added 43 runs with Sophie Devine. Kerr and Devine accelerated the innings, scoring 23 runs in the 10th and 11th overs.
Sri Lanka's bowlers maintained discipline and executed sharp fielding, highlighted by Kawya Kavindi's exceptional running catch to dismiss Kerr, who scored 45 runs off 36 balls. Devine also showcased her form with a solid 45 runs off 30 balls, including four boundaries and the only six of the innings. Maddy Green chipped in with a quick 18, helping New Zealand finish at 150/6. Kavisha Dilhari was Sri Lanka's standout bowler, taking 2 wickets for 35 runs, with contributions from all six bowlers.
Sri Lanka's Chase Unfolds
Sri Lanka started their chase cautiously but picked up pace during the power play, scoring 29 runs in the last two overs of that phase.
Initial Momentum and Setbacks
Captain Chamari Athapaththu provided early momentum with four boundaries and a six but was dismissed for 27 while trying to accelerate, leading to a collapse that left Sri Lanka at 55/4.
Despite New Zealand's improved fielding, they could not maintain pressure as Sri Lanka began to rebuild. Georgia Plimmer took a sharp catch to dismiss Vishmi Gunarathne, and Amelia Kerr executed a direct hit to run out Hasini Perera, but the intensity waned as the chase progressed.
Silva's Steadying Influence
Nilakshika Silva then anchored the innings, forming a vital 50-run partnership with Dilhari to revive the chase.
Even after Dilhari's run-out, Silva remained composed, guiding the innings alongside wicketkeeper Kaushini Nuthyangana.
Silva finished with an unbeaten 54 runs off 37 balls, marking her second T20I half-century, with five fours and a six.
