Sri Lanka Adjusts Squad for ICC Women's T20 World Cup Following Injury

Sri Lanka's women's cricket team has made a crucial change to their squad for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after Shashini Gimhani was ruled out due to a lower-back injury. Chethana Vimukthi will step in as her replacement. The team, led by Chamari Athapaththu, is set to embark on their World Cup journey with warm-up matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands before facing England in their opening game. With hopes to improve from their previous performance, the squad aims for a stronger showing in this year's tournament.
 

Injury Forces Squad Change

Sri Lanka has made a necessary adjustment to their lineup for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after Shashini Gimhani was sidelined due to a lower-back injury. Gimhani, who has participated in seven T20 internationals, has claimed six wickets with an average of 21.16 and an economy rate of 7.05. She will be replaced by Chethana Vimukthi, a right-arm seamer who has yet to debut in T20Is but has played three ODIs for Sri Lanka.


Journey to the World Cup

The 15-member squad from Sri Lanka departed for the UK on June 2, under the leadership of Chamari Athapaththu, who is set to make her tenth appearance in a T20 World Cup.


Before the tournament begins, Sri Lanka will engage in two warm-up matches against Pakistan and the Netherlands on June 6 and June 9, respectively. They will kick off their World Cup campaign against England on June 12 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The team aims to improve upon their ninth-place finish in the 2024 edition, where they were unable to secure a victory in any of their four matches.

The updated squad includes: Chamari Athapaththu (captain), Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunarathne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Imesha Dulani, Nilakshika Silva, Kaveesha Dilhari, Hansima Karunarathne, Kaushini Nuthyangana, Sugandika Dassanayaka, Nimasha Madushani, Kawya Kavindi, Malki Madara, Mithali Ayodhya, and Chethana Vimukthi.
