Speculations Rise Over Captain Amarinder Singh's Possible Return to Congress

Speculation is mounting in Punjab regarding former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's possible return to the Congress party. Close sources indicate that not only Singh but also many from his political faction are eager to rejoin. Following recent political developments, including the appointment of a new BJP president, Singh appears to feel sidelined within the BJP, raising questions about his future political success. The dynamics within Congress regarding his potential return are complex, with some leaders opposing it while others support it. This article delves into the implications of these developments for Punjab's political landscape.

Political Rumblings in Punjab

In Punjab's political circles, there is growing speculation that former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh may be preparing to rejoin the Congress party. According to close sources, not only is Singh interested in returning, but a significant portion of his political faction is also eager to re-enter Congress. Observers believe that a major political development could occur at any moment. Singh and his supporters have reportedly felt increasingly uncomfortable within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although these sentiments have often been expressed privately.

Discontent with BJP Leadership

Following the recent appointment of Punjab BJP President Singh Dhillon and the outcomes of the municipal elections, it appears that Captain Singh has concluded that his influence within the BJP is minimal. He believes that remaining with the party may limit his chances of political success in the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. In discussions with select journalists, Singh openly expressed his dissatisfaction regarding Dhillon's appointment, stating he was not consulted, despite widespread belief that the decision was made based on recommendations he provided.

Challenges for BJP in Punjab

Captain Singh and his allies are convinced that the BJP cannot gain power in Punjab without an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Reports suggest they view claims from some BJP leaders that the party can independently secure power in Punjab as unrealistic. There is a growing understanding within Singh's camp that it may be challenging for the Amarinder family to win the sole urban assembly seat in Patiala on a BJP ticket alone. They believe that such a possibility could only arise in the context of a BJP-SAD alliance.

Congress's Historical Success in Patiala

In contrast, while part of Congress, the family has traditionally achieved electoral success in this constituency, and many believe that their chances of winning under the Congress banner in the 2027 Assembly elections are significantly higher. There are reports that the family is considering Captain's daughter, Jai Inder Kaur, as a candidate for this seat. The pressing question now is whether the Congress leadership is prepared to welcome Singh back. While some Congress members are firmly against his return, others are in favor.

Unfulfilled Expectations from BJP

It is also well-known that Captain Singh and his supporters had hoped for a significant position, such as Governor or another key constitutional role, after joining the BJP. However, despite exploring such opportunities for several years, the BJP-led central government has not offered him any substantial role. Political circles indicate that the only relief provided was a halt to proceedings related to an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case involving family members.

Support from Family and Party Dynamics

At a recent event, a large flex sheet prominently displayed a photo of Captain Amarinder Singh alongside BJP National Secretary Tarun Chugh and former MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, signaling the importance the party places on this seasoned leader despite recent disagreements. Just days after Singh questioned the appointment of Dhillon as Punjab BJP President, his wife, Prineet Kaur, who transitioned from Congress MP to BJP leader, pledged full support to the new state president. During her speech at the event where Dhillon was to assume office, Kaur emphasized the need for unity ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
