Amit Shah's Meeting with President Murmu Sparks Cabinet Reshuffle Rumors
In light of ongoing speculation regarding a potential reshuffle in the central cabinet, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. This meeting occurred just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's own discussion with the President. These developments have garnered significant attention, particularly as the BJP has opted not to renominate several ministers for the Rajya Sabha, while assigning others critical organizational roles within their respective states. The President's office shared a photo of Shah's meeting on social media, stating, 'Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah met with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.' The importance of these meetings is underscored by the ongoing discussions about a cabinet reshuffle.
Resignations and Non-renominations Fuel Speculation
Recently, senior BJP leader George Kurien resigned from the council of ministers following the end of his Rajya Sabha term. The 65-year-old Kurien held the position of Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy. The BJP decided against renominating Kurien, whose term in the upper house concluded on June 21. Similarly, Rail Minister Ravneet Singh, whose Rajya Sabha term also ended on the same date, was not renominated by the BJP. Singh, who has been a member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan since August 2024, also oversees the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The assignment of significant organizational responsibilities to some central ministers in their home states has further intensified discussions about a possible reshuffle.
Leadership Changes Within the BJP
BJP National President Nitin Naveen appointed Harsh Malhotra, the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Corporate Affairs, as the new president of the Delhi BJP on May 28. Last December, Pankaj Chaudhary, the Minister of State for Finance, was named the new head of the BJP's Uttar Pradesh unit. The meetings between Shah and PM Modi with the President, along with changes in ministerial terms and party responsibilities, have heightened speculation regarding a potential reshuffle in the central cabinet.
