South Africa is set to contest the red card and subsequent three-match suspension handed to Themba Zwane. Head coach Hugo Broos highlighted a perceived inconsistency in officiating, particularly in comparison to Lionel Messi's actions during Argentina's opening match against Algeria, where he was not penalized despite a similar incident.

Broos Critiques Officiating Standards

Zwane received a red card in the 84th minute of the match against Mexico, which ultimately left South Africa with only nine players and resulted in a 2-0 defeat. Broos criticized the officiating, noting that Messi's stamp on Aissa Mandi went unpunished, which he views as a double standard.

"I don't want Messi to be sent off; he is a phenomenal player. But why the disparity?" Broos remarked during a press conference, as reported by a media outlet.

Broos Questions the Severity of Zwane's Red Card

"The red card shown to Zwane was excessive. After reviewing the incident, I believe it shouldn't have been a red card," Broos stated. He contrasted this with Messi's situation, noting that there appeared to be no VAR review for Messi's incident, while Zwane's was scrutinized.

Impact of Suspensions on South Africa's World Cup Journey

Zwane was sent off just 23 minutes after entering the game, raising his arms towards a Mexican defender during an attacking play. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio issued the red card following a VAR review, leaving Broos bewildered.

"The Mexican player was obstructing my player without looking at the ball, and for that, Zwane receives a red card and a three-match ban? That seems overly harsh," he expressed.

As South Africa awaits the outcome of their appeal, Zwane's absence could hinder their chances of advancing to the round of 16, a significant milestone for the team. Additionally, Sphephelo Sithole faces a one-match suspension for denying a goal-scoring opportunity earlier in the match.

In contrast, Messi went unpunished and scored a hat-trick, making history as the joint-leading goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup tournaments.

"I am certainly frustrated by this situation," Broos concluded.

South Africa is scheduled to face Czechia in Atlanta on Thursday, followed by a match against South Korea in Guadalupe on June 24.
