South Africa has made significant changes to its squad ahead of the second Test against Australia, set to begin on October 18 in Gqeberha. With Matthew Breetzke replacing Tristan Stubbs and the potential return of Kagiso Rabada, the team aims to strengthen its lineup after a disappointing performance in the first Test. Stubbs was dropped following a lackluster showing, while Breetzke hopes to capitalize on his opportunity. The squad features a mix of experienced players and newcomers as South Africa seeks to level the series.

Squad Adjustments for Upcoming Test

South Africa has revealed a 17-member squad for the second Test match against Australia, which is set to commence on Sunday, October 18, in Gqeberha. Matthew Breetzke has been brought in to replace Tristan Stubbs, while Ryan Rickelton is expected to take on the wicketkeeping responsibilities. These modifications may allow South Africa to add another specialist batter to their lineup, aiming to enhance their batting performance after a lackluster showing in the first match of the series.

Rabada's Possible Comeback

Tony de Zorzi, a left-handed batter, remains sidelined as he recovers from a left hamstring injury. On the other hand, Kagiso Rabada, the team's leading pace bowler, might make his return to the squad for the second Test after missing the opening match. His inclusion would significantly strengthen South Africa's bowling unit as they seek to recover from a heavy 214-run loss to Australia in Durban and aim to equalize the series in Gqeberha.

Stubbs Excluded, Breetzke Included

Following the defeat in the first Test, Stubbs was the sole player omitted from South Africa's squad. He scored 32 and 1 in the match, despite having previously achieved a commendable 94 in his last Test innings against India nearly a year ago. Breetzke has been selected as his replacement for the upcoming Test in Gqeberha. Although he has played two Tests for South Africa, against Bangladesh in October 2024 and Zimbabwe in July 2025, he has only accumulated 14 runs in those matches. Breetzke will be eager to seize this opportunity, having maintained a first-class batting average of 37.03.
