Call for Government Action on Air Quality
Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress parliamentary party, called on the central government on Thursday to take measures to control air pollution in Delhi-NCR, emphasizing the impact on children and the elderly. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, she stated that it is the government's responsibility to act. "Children are suffering, and for seniors like myself, it is also challenging," she remarked.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also highlighted the issue, accusing the government of failing to take substantial action. She mentioned that the opposition does not wish to politicize the matter and will support the government when effective measures are implemented to combat pollution.
The Congress MP questioned what kind of weather should be enjoyed, pointing out the dire conditions outside. As Sonia Gandhi noted, children are struggling to breathe, suffering from asthma, and elderly individuals are facing difficulties as well. The situation has been worsening year after year, with only statements being made and no concrete actions taken. "We have all stated that the government must act, and we stand with them. This is not a political issue to blame each other over," she added.
Earlier today, opposition MPs protested against the central government in the Parliament complex regarding air pollution in Delhi-NCR and parts of North India. They were seen wearing oxygen masks and holding a banner mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which read, "Enjoy the weather." This comment followed Modi's address at the beginning of the winter session of Parliament.
Chanting slogans, the leaders demanded a parliamentary discussion on air pollution. Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Sonia Gandhi, participated in the protest outside the Parliament building.
