Sonam Wangchuk Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi After Hospital Discharge

Upon being discharged from the hospital, Sonam Wangchuk made his way directly to Rajghat. After enduring a rigorous 26-day hunger strike and receiving treatment at Medanta, paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi was his foremost intention. While honoring Bapu, he conveyed a message to the nation that the path of truth and non-violence remains the most effective approach today. Wangchuk emphasized that a robust democracy is one where governments respect the voice of the people and resolve conflicts through dialogue. Prior to his hospital release, activist Sonam Wangchuk had announced his plans to visit Rajghat to pay his respects to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to Ladakh. In a post on X, he stated that his first stop would be Rajghat to honor Gandhi. He recalled that he had done the same after returning from Switzerland before commencing his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. He expressed his relief, stating, 'Finally, the day has come when I am being discharged from this hospital. Before heading home to Ladakh, I will first visit Rajghat to pay my respects to Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi).'

Reflecting on the start of his campaign, Wangchuk reminded everyone that upon his return from Switzerland, he had paid tribute at Rajghat before heading to Jantar Mantar. He reiterated that today, he would follow the same path before departing for his home in Ladakh. Before leaving, Wangchuk expressed heartfelt gratitude to supporters from across the country. He stated, 'Before I go, I want to sincerely thank all of you. People of all ages, from near and far, joined us in this campaign and movement, and we succeeded. Amid nationwide protests over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the council of ministers. The usually quiet protest site at Jantar Mantar buzzed with activity as youth and students participated in the CJP-led demonstrations, showcasing creative banners and using 'Gen Z' slang. The movement gained momentum after activist Sonam Wangchuk joined in, becoming the face of the protest with his 26-day hunger strike.
