On Tuesday morning, Soman Rana, the gold medalist from the Commonwealth Games 2026, received a heartfelt reception at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Indian team returned home after a triumphant performance in Glasgow. Soman, who made history by securing India's inaugural gold in the men's F57 shot put, expressed that his sights are now set on the upcoming Asian Games and the Olympics.

Upon his arrival in Delhi, Soman shared with reporters, "This medal represents not just my achievement but also that of my country, the army, and my home state. I am filled with joy. The Paralympics have gained significant recognition lately, which was not the case before. I am gearing up for the Asian Games and Olympics, aiming to bring home another medal for India."

Historic Achievement in Glasgow

Soman concluded his Glasgow campaign with a remarkable throw of 13.40 meters, earning him gold in the men's F57 shot put final. His teammate, Shubham Juyal, followed closely, securing silver with a throw of 13.28 meters. This achievement marked India's first-ever one-two finish in this event at the Commonwealth Games, showcasing the nation's growing prowess in para athletics.

An Inspiring Athletic Journey

At 43, Soman's victory is a testament to his inspiring journey in sports. Once a prominent amateur boxer, his life changed dramatically in December 2006 when he lost a leg due to a landmine explosion while serving with the Gorkha Rifles in Jammu and Kashmir. During his rehabilitation at the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune, he discovered para athletics and joined the Army Paralympic Node in 2017.

Achievements and Recognition

Since then, Soman has proudly represented India at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, accumulating an impressive record that includes a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games and a bronze at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships.
