NALBARI, June 13: In a commendable effort to raise awareness about the endangered river dolphin, a resident of Gamarimuri village in Nalbari district has taken a significant initiative. Champak Sarma, an employee of the Indian Postal Service, has established a small dolphin park adjacent to his home.
The park, named Dolphin Park at Harekrishna Karuna Land, spans an area of four kathas and features a statue of a dolphin.
This impressive cement sculpture measures seven feet four inches in length and weighs 72 kilograms. The park was officially inaugurated on June 9 by senior journalist Ramen Kalita, located along the Kaithalkuchi Chamta road. During the inauguration, Kalita commended Sarma for his unique contribution to environmental awareness. Sarma dedicated this park to his father, aiming to educate the younger generation about the plight of this endangered species.
Using his own funds, Sarma crafted the statue himself, with assistance from Himanshu Barman, Phatik Baishya, and Mukut Talukdar. He expressed that dolphins are considered auspicious and have historically been viewed as friends of humans. Unfortunately, he noted, these magnificent creatures have largely vanished from Assam's rivers.
