Exploring the Unique Customs of the Third Gender Community
Understanding the Third Gender Community
The third gender, known as 'Hijras' in our society, holds a distinct status. Their lives are markedly different from the mainstream, encompassing unique lifestyles and customs. Many may not be familiar with their enigmatic world, so today, we will delve into their customs and traditions. From birth to death, they follow specific rituals. While you may have heard about their births, have you ever witnessed a Hijra funeral?
It’s likely you haven’t. The reason behind this is quite intriguing. Typically, the deceased are kept hidden from public view. Unlike most funerals that occur during the day, Hijra funerals are conducted at night to prevent onlookers from witnessing the procession. This practice stems from long-standing traditions within the Hijra community. Additionally, it is believed that no members from outside their community should attend these funerals.
When a Hijra passes away, the community does not engage in mourning. Instead, they celebrate the death, viewing it as a release from the hardships of earthly life. In their grief, they often donate money, praying for a favorable rebirth for the deceased. Interestingly, before the final rites, the community members strike the body with shoes and sandals, a practice believed to absolve the deceased of their sins. Although they identify with Hindu beliefs, they do not perform cremation; instead, they bury their dead.
