A Tale of Redemption: The Landlord's Journey to Healing
The Landlord's Illness
In a village, a landlord had been suffering from a severe illness for many years. He had consulted numerous doctors and healers, leaving no stone unturned in his quest for a cure.
Despite all efforts, he found no relief.
A Visit to the Saint
One day, a saint visited the village, and the landlord went to pay his respects. With a heavy heart, he expressed his plight, saying, "I am the landlord of this village, owning hundreds of acres, yet I am afflicted by an incurable disease!"
The saint inquired about his ailment.
The Painful Condition
The landlord explained, "I experience severe bleeding and unbearable pain during bowel movements, making me feel as if my life is slipping away. Please help me!"
The saint closed his eyes and sat in silence for a moment before asking, "Would you mind if I asked you something?"
The landlord replied, "No, please go ahead!"
A Question of Conscience
The saint then posed a thought-provoking question: "Have you ever caused someone so much pain that they wished ill upon you, and now you are suffering the consequences?"
The landlord, taken aback, responded, "No, I don't recall ever hurting anyone."
The saint urged him to reflect on his actions, asking if he had ever taken someone’s rights or caused them distress.
Realization and Change
After some contemplation, the landlord admitted, "I have a widowed sister-in-law who has been demanding her share of the land. I withheld it, fearing she might give it to her brothers."
The saint advised him to start sending her a monthly allowance of one hundred rupees, a significant amount at that time.
The Path to Healing
The landlord began sending her money. A few weeks later, he returned to the saint, saying, "I feel seventy-five percent better!"
The saint questioned him about the amount he was sending, to which he replied, "I send seventy-five rupees each month."
The saint explained, "That’s why your illness hasn’t fully healed! You must give her her rightful share with respect, allowing her to manage her own affairs."
A Lesson Learned
The saint reminded him of the pain his sister-in-law had endured, which was causing his own suffering.
He urged the landlord to consider what would remain after death.
Filled with regret, the landlord called his sister-in-law and her brothers, publicly giving her the land and money owed, while seeking forgiveness for his past wrongs.
Restoration and Blessings
His sister-in-law forgave him and blessed him and his family.
Soon after, the landlord's illness was completely cured.
