Prime Minister's Tribute to the Socceroos

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his admiration for the Socceroos following their emotional exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Friday (Local Time). Despite a penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the Round of 32, Albanese stated that the team had made the nation proud.

Australia's aspirations to advance to the last 16 were thwarted as they fell 4-2 in penalties after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes in Dallas. This victory allowed Egypt to progress to the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

Match Highlights

The match began with Australia showing promise, nearly scoring within the first five minutes when Cristian Volpato's long-range shot hit the crossbar. Jordan Bos also posed a threat, but Rami Rabia's timely intervention prevented a goal.

Egypt took the lead with their first shot on target in the 13th minute, as Karim Hafez's precise cross was headed in by Emam Ashour, putting the Pharaohs ahead.

Australia equalized shortly after halftime when Mohamed Hany inadvertently redirected an Australian free-kick into his own net, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach was instrumental in keeping Australia in the game, making a fantastic one-handed save against Rabia's header, while Harry Souttar blocked a shot from Haisem Hassan as the match progressed to extra time.

The Penalty Shootout

With neither team able to score in the additional 30 minutes, veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan was brought in, anticipating a penalty shootout. However, Egypt maintained their composure during the shootout. Souttar's attempt at Australia's first penalty soared over the crossbar, while Mohamed Salah executed a Panenka to score for Egypt.

After 18-year-old Lucas Herrington missed Australia's fourth penalty, Hossam Abdelmaguid calmly converted the decisive kick, securing a 4-2 victory for Egypt.

This result concluded Australia's World Cup campaign, while Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time, where they will face either the defending champions Argentina or Cape Verde in their next match.
