Snowfall and Rain Bring Relief to Kashmir as Winter Begins
Winter Weather Arrives in Kashmir
On Sunday, snowfall was reported in the higher regions of Kashmir, while the plains experienced rainfall. The onset of 'Chilla-e-Kalan,' the harshest 40-day winter period, has provided significant relief to the valley's residents after an extended dry spell.
Officials indicated that Gulmarg, located in the Baramulla district of northern Kashmir, received snowfall, accumulating nearly two inches. Additionally, snowfall commenced in Sonmarg, situated along the Srinagar-Kargil highway, and continued until the latest updates.
Moderate snowfall has been recorded at Sadhna Top, which connects the Tangdhar sector near the Line of Control to the main Kashmir valley, resulting in about six inches of snow since Saturday night.
Authorities reported that light rain began overnight in Srinagar and other parts of the valley, intermittently continuing throughout the day. The meteorological department has forecasted an increase in both snowfall and rain over the next 48 hours.
The recent precipitation in Kashmir marks the end of a prolonged dry period, which had led to a rise in common illnesses like coughs and colds, particularly among children and the elderly.
Local residents view the snowfall and rain on the first day of Chilla-e-Kalan as an auspicious sign, heralding a promising winter ahead. Last year, the dry winter posed significant challenges for locals and those in the tourism sector. The Chilla-e-Kalan period will conclude on January 30, followed by 'Chilla-e-Khurd' (minor cold) and 'Chilla-e-Bachha' (light cold) phases.
