Slovak National Detained in Mizoram for Border Crossing Attempt
Detention of Foreign National
Aizawl, March 26: A 58-year-old man from Slovakia has been apprehended by Mizoram Police for allegedly trying to cross the border into Myanmar without proper travel documentation, as reported by officials at the Siaha Police Station.
Sources from the police indicate that the identity of the foreign national remains undisclosed, and he is currently under investigation. State police, along with Central and State intelligence agencies, are conducting interrogations to uncover more details about his intentions and background.
The individual was intercepted on Tuesday by personnel from the Assam Rifles stationed along the porous border near Laki village, approximately 60-75 km from Siaha, the district headquarters. Following his apprehension, he was taken to Siaha for further legal action and investigation.
Initial reports suggest that the man stated he was traveling to Myanmar to attend a traditional water festival. Officials are in the process of verifying this claim.
This incident is particularly noteworthy in light of a recent crackdown on foreign nationals in the state. On March 13, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) detained six Ukrainians and one American at various airports across the country.
The NIA has alleged that this group entered Mizoram without the required Protected Area Permit (PAP), crossed into Myanmar, and was involved in training ethnic armed groups in drone warfare, as well as facilitating the smuggling of European-made drones into conflict zones.
However, the Mizoram Police have yet to independently verify the NIA's claims. Investigators suspect that the seven foreigners may have evaded formal entry points, including Lengpui Airport near Aizawl, and instead entered the state through Assam, likely via the Vairengte sector along the inter-state border.
Officials have stated that this case is being approached with caution due to rising security concerns along the international border and the recent incidents involving foreign nationals in the area.
