Authorities have detained six individuals and a minor in connection with the death of a 26-year-old man during a Holi celebration in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, as reported on Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Tarun Kumar, suffered critical injuries during the altercation and succumbed to his wounds while receiving medical care on Thursday.

This incident unfolded on Wednesday in the JJ Colony of Hasthsal village, triggered by an accidental water balloon thrown by an 11-year-old girl, which hit a Muslim woman below, igniting a dispute between two neighboring families of different faiths.

Escalation of Conflict

The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, according to police reports.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kushal Pal Singh noted that family members from both sides engaged in a brawl on the street.

“Three individuals from one side and five from the other were injured,” Singh stated, adding that all but one of the injured were released the same day.

Arrests and Demolition Actions

The arrested individuals have been named as Umardeen, Jummadeen, Kamruddin, Mustaque, Muzzafar, and Tahir.

On Sunday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi took action to demolish a property associated with one of the suspects.

While there are no legal provisions in India that permit property demolition as punishment, this practice has become increasingly common in states governed by the ruling party.

Legal Proceedings and Community Response

Initially, police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted culpable homicide and common intention.

Following Kumar's death, murder charges were added, along with provisions from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Reports indicate that the two families had a long-standing relationship, often clashing over minor issues like parking and waste disposal.

Community Tensions and Official Statements

In the aftermath of the incident, tensions escalated, resulting in damage to vehicles and some being set ablaze during protests, prompting police and paramilitary deployment.

Authorities conducted a flag march and set up barricades to maintain order, urging residents to refrain from spreading rumors or inflaming communal tensions.

Kumar's family has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, claiming that up to 20 individuals were involved in the incident.

Government Reaction

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condemned the murder as “heartbreaking and reprehensible,” emphasizing a commitment to swift legal action against those responsible.

“Delhi maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such violent crimes,” Gupta asserted, vowing that such brutality would not be tolerated.
