Jorhat, Sept 20: On Saturday, Sivasagar Police shot and injured a suspected drug dealer, Vicky Singh, during an escape attempt while he was in custody related to the murder of former CRPF jawan Biman Barua, a resident of Bihubar.

Details of the Incident

Singh, who is believed to be the mastermind behind Barua's murder, was taken to the crime scene by the police to identify the location where he allegedly discarded the weapon. During this process, he attempted to flee.

According to Bihubar Police Station officer Nabin Chetia, "He tried to grab the firearm from us while holding the ASI against his chest. When I intervened, he stepped back. I ordered him to halt, fired a warning shot into the air, but he continued to escape. Consequently, we shot him in the right leg."

Medical Treatment and Arrest

Singh suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical care. Later that night, he was taken to Sivasagar Sadar Police Station.

Chetia confirmed, "The injury is not life-threatening, and he will be sent to jail." Another suspect, Rubul Khan, who was also implicated in the case, surrendered to the Bihubar Police Station on Saturday morning.

Background of the Murder

Biman Barua was fatally attacked on Friday night at Rangajan Benguli Basti in Bihubar, reportedly with a sharp weapon. He died instantly from his injuries.

Chetia explained, "Barua, along with several villagers, was gathering evidence against Vicky and Rubul Khan when they were assaulted with a sword. Barua was killed on the spot, while the other villagers managed to escape."

Aftermath and Police Action

Following the attack, Singh allegedly fled to Nagaland, prompting Bihubar Police to reach out to their counterparts in the neighboring state.

Nagaland Police later informed Assam Police about Singh's whereabouts. A police team led by Chetia subsequently apprehended Singh in Naginimora on Saturday in connection with the murder.

Authorities noted that Singh has been previously implicated in multiple drug-related cases registered at various police stations.
