Significant Price Hike in LPG Cylinders Shocks Consumers

The beginning of May has brought alarming news for consumers as LPG cylinder prices soar. A significant increase of ₹261 for the 5 kg cylinder and nearly ₹1,000 for commercial cylinders has raised concerns, especially among daily wage workers and students. This inflationary trend is linked to global crises, particularly the situation in Iran, which has exacerbated the LPG shortage in India. As prices reach new heights, the financial burden on those who rely on these cylinders for cooking is becoming increasingly severe. Read on to understand the implications of these price hikes and their impact on everyday life.

Inflation Hits Hard as LPG Cylinder Prices Surge

The onset of May has brought a severe inflation shock for the general public. Just as news broke about a nearly ₹1,000 increase in commercial gas cylinder prices, the smaller 5 kg LPG cylinder has also seen a drastic price hike. According to sources, the cost of the 5 kg cylinder has surged by ₹261. This inflationary impact is particularly felt by those who earn daily and rely on their income for sustenance.

New Prices Reach Unprecedented Levels

Following this steep increase, the price of the 5 kg cylinder has now skyrocketed. Reports indicate that what was previously priced at ₹549 is now set at ₹810. This sudden ₹261 increase is a significant blow for smaller consumers. Earlier today, the price of the 19 kg commercial cylinder also rose by ₹993, leading to a new cost of ₹3,071.50 in Delhi, up from ₹2,078.50.

Students and Laborers Bear the Brunt

The 5 kg cylinder is predominantly used by individuals without a permanent residence or those living alone. Migrant workers who leave their villages for jobs in other states heavily depend on this cylinder. Additionally, students residing in different cities for education will now face increased monthly expenses. Daily wage workers and small shop owners, including street vendors and small eatery operators, will find it more expensive to cook.

Global Crisis Influences Local Prices

The surge in gas prices is attributed to global circumstances. Since the attacks on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28, the international LPG crisis has intensified. The effects have already been visible in India, prompting a migration of laborers from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Surat. This latest price hike has exacerbated an already dire situation.
