Defence Budget Hike and Its Implications

Guwahati, Feb 5: The recent 15% increase in the defence budget has been praised by Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita (Retd), former GOC-in-C of the Eastern Command of the Army, who believes this enhancement will bolster India's self-reliance in the defence sector.

In a discussion, Lt Gen Kalita emphasized that such a substantial rise in the defence budget is unprecedented. He highlighted that national security is crucial for any nation's development. Given India's geographical context, surrounded by adversarial nations, robust defence preparedness is essential.

He noted that since gaining independence, Pakistan has consistently posed a threat, leading to multiple conflicts. While relations with China have seen some improvement, the potential for confrontation remains due to unresolved border issues. Until these disputes are settled, tensions are likely to persist.

Additionally, the current relationship with Bangladesh is not particularly amicable, further underscoring the need for enhanced defence readiness.

According to Lt Gen Kalita, a formidable navy is crucial not only for national security but also for safeguarding maritime trade routes, which are vital for the economy. He stressed the necessity for the Indian Navy to monitor these routes and the broader Indian Ocean, necessitating the acquisition of new vessels.

He also pointed out that the nature of warfare has evolved, with technology playing a pivotal role. India must strive for technological self-sufficiency, as reliance on foreign technology may not always be feasible during critical times. Continuous technological advancements are imperative.

Furthermore, he mentioned the need for India to invest in new drone technologies, advanced missiles, air defence systems, and aircraft, all of which require budget augmentation.
